Huckleberry Mountain Candle
Huckleberry Mountain Candle Company is a one lady endeavor located in the hills of Cocolalla, Idaho opposite Huckleberry Mountain. Yes, it’s a place. My name is Renee Harper and I make repurposed wine bottle soy candles.
I was raised on candles burning in the evenings instead of electric lighting; partially for energy efficiency, partially to create a relaxing atmosphere for my single mother. I’ve always found it comforting.
Fast forward to 2020. Covid had me down in the dumps with the cancellation of, well, everything. Feeling very unsettled and confined, I went back to the place in my heart where comfort resides & dove into a new hobby to occupy my time. That’s when Huckleberry Mountain Candle Company began.
Permission was granted to glean from the recycle bin at a local winery. Since glass isn’t as recyclable as it used to be and their bin is always max capacity, they gladly obliged. With a collection of empty wine bottles, I began to transform trash to treasure. Repurposing each bottle by ‘cutting’, hand sanding and hand filling with scented soy wax. In addition to wine bottle candles, I also make soy travel tins, tea lights, wine glass candles and 1/2 pint mason candles.
Balancing a full time job & growing a hobby to a business has its challenges in regards to direct selling at events and time management. I find direct selling especially rewarding because I really enjoy meeting other artists and personal interaction with customers. Vending with CDA Flea in Coeur d’Alene and Ponderay Sunday Market in Sandpoint has been an exciting new opportunity .
You can also find my products locally at Possibilities Wine Shoppe across from the Coeur d’Alene Resort and at Northwest Handmade in Sandpoint. Moving forward, this autumn the focus will be to expand local consignment selling as well as opening up online sales opportunities on Instagram and Etsy.
